Pickering College teacher garners award for fostering critical thinking

 What is Class ACT Award?

In recognition of educators who have embedded critical thinking into their own practice and furthered critical thinking with their students or colleagues

The Critical Thinking Consortium established the Certificate of Achievement in Critical Thinking (Class ACT Award) to recognize individual educators who show a commitment to embedding critical thinking into their own practice and who have demonstrated notable success in furthering critical thinking with their students or colleagues.

TC² Partner representatives, facilitators or other senior members of the TC² team, nominate Class ACT recipients. Adjudication for successful nominees takes place prior to the Consortium’s Annual General Meeting in June, when the award recipients are recognized. To nominate a candidate please complete the online nomination form. If you wish, you may attach a copy of a sample lesson, student work or other evidence of the scope and success of the individual’s efforts.

“Being recognized for my work with Grade 6 is a huge honor,” Hamm said in a news release. “Receiving this award would not have been possible without the support from Pickering College.” I did some research about the school and realized the great support for the achievement lies in the school’s value like what they write on their website about the Role of Quakerism:

The role of Quakerism at Pickering College is a unique and defining aspect of our school. Retaining a close relationship with our Quaker heritage provides a philosophical, moral and operational framework for our planning and decision-making. Staying true to our Quaker ideals means:

  • recognizing that there is that of God in every person, regardless of age, gender, and ethnic background;
  • providing a high degree of caring, compassion, and support;
  • developing a strong social consciousness;
  • using consensus in decision-making;
  • emphasizing traditional Quaker values, such as non-violence and simplicity as well as the school values of community, compassion, integrity, respect, and responsibility; and
  • building our community through Morning Meeting.

Staying true to the beliefs and ideas deeply held by our Quaker founders means continuing to be a school that combines academic excellence with moral depth.
